Boilermaker

What They Do

Boilermakers assemble boilers, tanks, vats and pressure vessels according to blueprint specifications, using power tools and hand tools. Duties include welding, acetylene burning, riveting, caulking, rigging, fitting up, grounding, reaming and impact machine operating. A person wishing to enter this field should be able to plan ahead and visualize a completed project.

Working Conditions

The work is active and strenuous and may include standing for prolonged periods. Workers must be able to work without constant supervision and must perform tasks safely. Boilermakers often work in hazardous conditions, confined spaces and may work in the nuclear industry. They frequently work in dirty conditions and cannot have a fear of heights. May require considerable heavy lifting.

Qualifications

  • Competency in math and geometry
  • Experience in welding, drafting, blueprint reading, geometrical and projection drawing
  • Ability, aptitude and physical fitness to perform and master work of trade

Application Requirements

  • • 18 years or older
  • • Good physical condition
  • • Legal right to work and live in the United States
  • • Ability and aptitude to perform work
  • • Willingness to attend class and shop instruction on personal time

Apprenticeship

  • 4 year program
  • Minimum of 6,000 hours of on-the-job training
  • Probationary 6 month period
