Operating Engineer

What They Do

Operating engineers operate and maintain hoisting, grading and paving equipment consisting of cranes, bulldozers, scrapers, graders, endloaders, concrete and asphalt plants, rollers and pumps. Generally employed in building highways, airports, buildings, waterways, stadiums and sewers.

Working Conditions

Work is done outdoors and is usually seasonal. Operators should be mechanically inclined and have good muscular control and depth perception.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18
  • Prefer high school diploma or GED
  • General science, shop and math recommended
  • Blueprint reading, electricity knowledge, work on diesel engines, drafting, hydraulics and welding helpful

Application Requirements

  • Written aptitude, reading and math tests
  • Oral interview
  • Drug screening test
  • Valid driver's license

Apprenticeship

  • 4 year program
  • Probationary period of 450 on-the-job hours
  • Wage adjustment every 1,000 on-the-job hours based on work record and training
