Painter

What They Do

Painters prepare buildings, bridges and other surfaces and apply paint and other coatings by means of brushes, rollers and sprayers. Painters also work on interior rooms using paint and wall coverings. Mixing paints and using sandblasting and water blasting equipment is also a job requirement.

Working Conditions

Painters work both indoors and outdoors and may be required to work evenings and weekends. Work may be seasonal and could possibly include health hazards. Scaffolds and ladders are used often. Painters are often standing, bending, climbing and working with their arms above their head.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18
  • Good physical condition
  • Good eyesight and clear lungs
  • Courses in chemistry, math and shop recommended
  • Blueprint reading
  • Good artistic sense for painting and mixing color

Application Requirements

  • Contractor intent to hire
  • High school diploma or GED and transcripts
  • Personal interview

Apprenticeship

  • 4 year program
  • 90 day probationary period
  • 144 hours per year of related classroom instruction

Job Opportunities

May advance to supervisor or estimator with painting and decorating contractor or establish own business.
