Pipefitter

What They Do

Pipefitters install piping systems that carry hot water, steam, air or other liquid or gases needed for industrial production or other uses. They also install high or low pressure systems in industrial and commercial buildings and lay out fabricate and assemble pipes from drawings, blueprints and specifications. Pipefitters work on pipes for heating and cooling systems and install sprinkler systems.

Working Conditions

Work both inside and out usually after the basic structure is erected. The work is active and strenuous including walking, standing, reaching, lifting and working in cramped quarters. Pipefitters are subject to the hazards of working with and around high-pressure gas, steam and chemical lines. Will usually work with different individual on each job.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18
  • Aptitude in mechanical ability and manual dexterity
  • Good eyesight and clear lungs
  • Courses in science, math, geometry and trigonometry recommended
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, welding, metal and machine shop, mechanical drawing and blueprint reading helpful
  • Able to solve math problems quickly and accurately and understand detailed, written and verbal instructions

  • • Written standardized test may be required

Apprenticeship

  • 5 year program
  • One year probationary period
  • 160 hours per year of classroom work
  • 1,750 hours of on-the-job training per year
