Plasterer

What They Do

Plasterers are the building craftsmen who apply plaster to interior walls and ceilings to form fire-resistant and relatively soundproof surfaces, which may then be decorated. They also apply stucco to exterior walls (exterior insulation finish system) and cast ornamental designs in plaster.

Working Conditions

Some of the work is done outdoors and depends on weather conditions. While most plastering jobs are indoors, sometimes plasterers work on high scaffolds. Plastering requires considerable standing, bending, lifting and reaching overhead.

Interest and Temperament

The trade requires good manual skills. Persons should enjoy working with their hands and accept working outdoors in various weather conditions.

General Qualifications

  • At least 17 years of age
  • Must be physically capable of performing the work of the trade
  • Pre-employment physical examination of each applicant is required
  • Must pass a standardized test prescribed by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee

Educational Background Recommended

Good reading ability, general math, science mechanical drawing and general shop classes

Admission Requirements of the Joint Apprenticeship Committee

  • Transcript of high school records or certificate of equivalency is required
  • Each applicant is required to provide the Joint Apprenticeship
  • Committee with a copy of his birth certificate
  • Personal interview

Terms of Apprenticeship Training

  • Length of indentureship - 6,000 hours
  • Minimum hours of related classroom instruction - 144 hours each year
  • Indentured to the Joint Apprenticeship Committee
