Plumber

What They Do

Plumbers install water line systems in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. They also install natural gas and air lines. Installation of all work is completed to specification and plumbing code. Another aspect of the job is to measure, cut, thread, bend, install and test pipes and pipefittings.

Working Conditions

Work can be active, strenuous and dirty. May be required to stand for prolonged periods, sometimes in cramped, uncomfortable positions. Plumbers will climb ladders and will work below ground level.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18
  • American citizen or declaration of intent
  • Courses in science, physics, algebra and geometry recommended
  • Knowledge of metal shop, welding, drafting and blueprint reading helpful

Application Requirements

  • Written and oral exam
  • High school diploma or GED and transcript

Apprenticeship

  • 5 year program
  • One year probationary period
  • Indentured to Joint Apprenticeship Committee
