Sheet Metal Worker

What They Do

Sheet metal workers fabricate and install ductwork for heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. In addition, they fabricate and install roof decks, paint ovens, spray booths, dust collecting systems, architectural sheet metal products and food service equipment.

Working Conditions

Work is laid out on metal sheets from blueprints, formed, fabricated and installed on the job site. The understanding of blueprints and the ability to work to close tolerances are necessary. Sheet Metal Workers should enjoy working with their hands and have ability to think for themselves without constant supervision.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18
  • Physical ability to perform work
  • Courses in algebra, geometry and trigonometry recommended
  • Knowledge of mechanical drafting, general metal fabrication and welding helpful

Application Requirements

  • Written and oral exam

Apprenticeship

  • 5 year program
  • Mandatory classroom instruction throughout apprenticeship
  • Minimum 8,000 hours of on-the-job training over 5 years
  • 1 year probationary period
  • Indentured to the Joint Apprenticeship and training Committee and assigned to a sheet metal contractor

Job Opportunities

Sheet metal workers may advance to supervisory jobs. Some take additional training in welding and do more specialized work. Others go into the contracting business for themselves.
