Construction Employers Association’s (CEA) Board of Directors approved the Contractors Assistance Association (CAA) as a new affiliate association in 2008. The CAA mission is to provide resources to increase contracting, education and employment in the Northeast Ohio Construction Industry. CAA supports Business, Civic and Community initiatives which further the Construction Industry.

Three initials goals and programs developed include:

(1) Assist the Construction Employers Association and Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Ohio / Cleveland in increasing awareness of employment opportunities including the City of Cleveland Fannie Lewis and Cleveland Residency Laws (requiring the hiring a minimum of 20% Cleveland residents on Cleveland projects) and equal opportunity laws. This effort includes outreach in conjunction with union affiliated pre-apprenticeship training. Terri Sandu, Hard Hatted Women - chairperson

(2) Establishing AGC Construction Career Academy and Career Pathways in Construction are primary objectives. The Construction Management Academy Program (CMAP) in collaboration with Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) and Cuyahoga Community College provides industry related professional education / training to increase the supply of motivated students entering the Construction Industry. CAA assists CMAP students seeking mentors, internships, part time and full time employment.

The inaugural class of CMSD senior students had 3.0 GPA’s and 90% attendance and were placed in paid internships upon completion of 75 classroom hour CMAP curriculum (OSHA 10 / Safety Training; Blue Print Reading; Construction Accounting & Estimating, Sustainability & Green Building and Job Readiness courses). (3) Contracting / Mentor Protégé programs to support contractors in business management, estimating, safety, technical assistance, including development of contractor / subcontractor and joint venture relationships. This is a win- win opportunity for firms to work together developing additional business.

Advocacy and Information sharing related to the Construction Industry, is an ongoing CAA activity. We are seeking support for our 2010 efforts and programs and welcome participation / involvement.
