Crews are casting concrete on a massive scale underneath downtown Lorain.

Work has started on pumping concrete about 114 feet underground to create the 19-foot-diameter tube that will hold Lorain’s stormwater when it overflows the city storm sewers and mixes with sanitary sewage.

Workers started pouring concrete at the site known as Shaft 3, the hole dug down at the site of the former Lorain Pellet Terminal across from Lorain City Hall. The tunnel runs about 5,600 feet south and connects to a drop shaft built off Black River Wharf at 14th Street.
