New Facade Inspection Requirement Likely

A proposed new Cleveland law – likely to be approved today and to take effect in June – will require periodic facade inspections for scads of buildings spread across the city.

The legislation is the result of nearly a year of discussions, spurred by an April 2015 parapet-wall collapse at the historic Garfield Building on East Sixth Street. Nobody was hurt in the Garfield Building incident, which happened on a Monday afternoon. But the potential for injury prompted discussions about ways to ensure that experts are looking at the exterior walls of older, taller buildings, including offices, factories and apartments."
