Women in Construction: Amy Metzgar

Amy Metzgar is 30 years old, married, and has two dogs. Since moving to Cleveland in 2012, she worked for a forensic animation company conducting investigations and recreations. In 2016, she applied and was eventually accepted into the teledata branch of Local 38. After working for approximately two years, she switched to the inside electrician program. Since being accepted into the electrician apprenticeship, she has become an active member of the Cleveland Tradeswomen group and developed a passion for empowering women in the trades.     

What brought or attracted you to the construction industry?    
I wanted a more active career after sitting behind a desk for too many years.     

What do you like most about your work?    
I enjoy being active everyday and learning as much as I can.     

What would you like to see change within the construction industry?    
I would like to see more women in the trades.     

What are your long term career goals?    
Right now I am focused on doing the best I can in my apprenticeship, but I am looking forward to being a productive journeyman.     

What advice would you give to other women interested in construction?    
Be assertive.     

Describe the kinds of opportunities in construction available to women?    
We have all-female social activities and charity events, we also have a conference every year.     

What can be done to attract more women to construction?
I believe that having programs and groups (like Cleveland Tradeswomen) to recruit more females is critical.
