Work Now Graduate: Lauren Benton, Carpenter Apprentice

Body

Lauren Benton was a participant in the Work Now: Construction Initiative held at CEA, in partnership with the Urban League of Greater Cleveland (ULGC).

As you all know, I completed the program with the intent of becoming a carpenter apprentice.... I'm more than happy to report that things are going really well! Work is very steady, still haven't been laid off, and my coworkers are working with me a lot more. I'm learning new things everyday and becoming more comfortable and confident. I'm also becoming more knowledgeable about my trade and the construction industry as a whole.

I'm also happy to report that I've been going to the Union meetings. I actually attended my first one last month. At the end of the meeting, the chairperson of our women's committee (Sisters of Brotherhood), invited me to an "invitation only" Women's Conference in Indiana.... It was the first one ever held in this region, so it was a pretty big deal. Over the past three days, I've learned so much. The support, tools, and knowledge was all over. I definitely enjoyed myself and am beyond thankful and appreciative of the invitation.

I was one of six African American females out of about 100. I was the only African American female representing my local. During the feedback period, I reluctantly raised my hand.... Needless to say, once I started speaking, I warmed up. I spoke about my journey into this industry, shining light upon light on CEA and ULGC. I also voiced my opinion about how there should be more classes like the one I took and how there should be more women involved. Just about every person that spoke after me agreed with what I said. They referenced me as the "girl in the brown jacket" (my name badge wasn't showing and I was sitting). But it felt pretty good to know people agreed with me.

I seriously can't thank you all enough for this opportunity! Thanks for your patience, perseverance, dedication, & time in general! I truly appreciate it. You all have definitely had an impact on my life in one way or another, and for that... I'm FOREVER grateful! Thank you. Thank you. THANK YOU!
