Topic: Working Effectively With Insurance Partners: A Contractor’s Guide to Stronger Evaluations & Lower Costs

This class equips construction companies with the knowledge and strategies needed to present their best selves during the insurance evaluation process. Participants will learn what insurers look for in safety programs, documentation, jobsite practices, and organizational culture when assessing risk. The session breaks down how proactive planning, well‑structured safety programs, and consistent implementation can positively influence underwriting decisions. Contractors will also discover practical steps to strengthen their safety performance in ways that lead to measurable cost savings, including reduced claim frequency, improved experience modification rates, and more favorable premium structures. By the end of the class, attendees will understand how to build a productive partnership with insurance providers and demonstrate the value of their safety commitment.

Speaker:  Joyce Diewald, CSP, CRIS, CHST

 Joyce Diewald, CSP, CRIS, CHST is an experienced safety and risk control professional with more than two decades of expertise in both insurance and construction environments. She currently serves as a Loss Control Construction Specialist with Central Insurance, where she supports contractors through strategic risk mitigation and safety planning. Joyce’s career also includes senior technical safety roles at organizations such as The Cincinnati Insurance Companies and Travelers, further strengthening her insurance-focused risk management background. With over 20 years working alongside construction teams, she brings deep practical insight into jobsite safety, subcontractor risk, and operational controls. In addition to her field expertise, Joyce teaches insurance and safety courses at Kent State University, helping develop the next generation of construction management professionals.
