Introduction to Estimating

Professionals with varying levels of construction experience, interested in understanding the basic principles and practices of construction estimating as well as more advanced practitioners that wish to enhance their estimating processes and best practices. Familiarity with blueprints and construction documents needed.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the terms and tools associated with a construction estimate
• Perform quantity takeoffs on construction building materials 
• Obtain a total estimated cost, including all markups for a construction project 
• Identify ways to avoid errors in estimates
• Describe and calculate the cost components of material, labor, and equipment pricing 
• Prepare a quote, write a scope of work and estimate subcontractor costs from historical data 
• Calculate building permit, bond, profit and overhead markups 
• Understand and perform a bid submission using standard bid documents 
• Identifying the information which should be included in a proposal letter
