CEA turned March into ‘Women’ in Construction ‘Month’
29 women in construction recognized in 31 days

CLEVELAND - Over the last 31 days, Construction Employers Association (CEA) recognized 29 women in architecture, construction and engineering. From tradeswomen and project managements to owners and an attorney, with years of experience ranging from less than three years to more than thirty, the list included a very diverse group of female professionals working in various sectors of the industry.

The profiles of the women, which provide their bio and Q&A, were published on CEA’s website and to their social media channels.

“While women in the construction industry do not reflect the demographics of society, we acknowledge the importance of the contributions women in construction make and want to recognize them,” said Glen Shumate, Executive Vice President of Construction Employers Association.

In addition to the “Women in Construction” digital campaign, CEA in conjunction with a National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) also hosted a panel discussion with four women - discussing their journey and experiences - at Tri-C Metro Jerry Sue Thornton Center, Ford Room on March 5th. The panelists included Cynthia Leitson, Marshay Anderson, Phoebe Lee, and Jill Van Auken.

“I thought it was very nice,” said Sheena Fain, of the panel discussion. Fain is CEO of Guided Growth Consulting LLC and student in the 51th James A. Walker Turner School of Construction Management class. “It was great seeing women in different aspects of the industry.”

Binisha Sherestha, a project engineer at Regency Construction Services, said one take away for her was hearing how the women balanced professional and personal lives. “I want to start a family but it’s scary. I feel a little more at ease knowing I can balance and still make it to the top. That gives me motivation.”

Other workshops, a training with Dale Carnegie and another on gender bias with the YWCA of Greater Cleveland Association, were scheduled yet had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

“Working with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) and Construction Assistance Association is a natural and plan to continue developing joint and unified programs,” said Shumate.
