Shook Construction Co. of Brecksville said it has promoted Chris Shafer to chief financial officer.

Shafer, who is a certified public accountant with 20 years of accounting experience, will oversee finance, human resources, information technology and risk management for the company, which last had a CFO in 2015. He started at Shook in 2014 as controller. Since then, the company said in an emailed news release, Shook has "experienced substantial growth, thus creating many opportunities for its own employees to step up into new leadership roles."

Shook executive vice president Chris Halapy said in a statement that Shafer "embodies our core values. It's important to us to first look within to fill leadership roles so that we can maintain our culture as we continue to grow."

Last year was a busy one for Shook. The company said it hit a record of "$505 million worth of new work" and opened an office in Columbus to expand its geographic footprint.

"Through this period of significant growth, Chris has shown an acute awareness of the financial intricacies of our business and the construction industry as a whole," Shook president and CEO Bill Whistler said in a statement. "Combine that with his innate leadership skills and he was the perfect fit to step up into our CFO role."

Shook was founded in 1926. It said it has annual revenue of $300 million and focuses its work in five market sectors: education, health care, industrial, data centers and water resources.
