A prominent publication just ranked Ohio as the top-performing U.S. state for economic development, based on a blend of investments in corporate facilities and public infrastructure.

Ohio edged out Indiana, Texas and other competitors to lead Site Selection’s 2023 Global Groundwork Index, which captures five years’ worth of activity. Two Buckeye State metropolitan areas — Columbus and Cincinnati — also made the magazine’s top 10 list of hot markets, landing in second and fifth place, respectively.

Gov. Mike DeWine attributed the win to the state’s focus on forward-looking spending.

“This winning formula includes preparing large-scale sites for industrial development, fortifying infrastructure statewide, nurturing our skilled workforce, streamlining regulatory processes and collaborating with private industry,” he said in a news release issued by JobsOhio, the state’s unusual private nonprofit economic development corporation.
