Shook Construction

How many years have you worked in the industry? I have been in the construction industry for about 10 years from interning in college to now.

What attracted you to the construction industry? I have always been interested in design and watching new buildings come to life. Rather than playing with dolls as a child, I had Lego, building blocks, and toy construction tools. As I grew up and learned about the industry and career opportunities, I knew this is what I wanted to do.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I love being on the jobsite and working with the trades to help a building come to life. It’s always rewarding to solve a constructability issue and help coordinate all aspects of a design, from foundations and structure, to balancing and power requirements.

What advice would you give other women considering the construction industry? I always tell women that are considering careers in construction to go for it and explore aspects of construction they are interested in. If they are willing to ask questions, learn, and work hard, they will excel in this industry.

What can be done to attract more women to construction? I think some accommodations have been made for women joining the industry including PPE made to fit women, female-only restrooms, and other construction tools. I think if more women join the industry, more can be reviewed and accommodated.

What do you like to do in your free time? One of my biggest hobbies is running. I have completed at least one half-marathon a year for the last 5 years and keep up on running in off training season. I’m still working up the courage to go after a full marathon.
