There’s a well-beaten path that many entrants into the world of construction have followed to become successful general contractors. Basically, it involves learning one trade as a novice, perfecting your skill, taking on side jobs while working for somebody else, and eventually making the jump to self-employed entrepreneur. The first office is often the kitchen table or a garage workbench. The initial “hire” is a bookkeeping spouse, and the first employee is a brother, cousin, or some variety of in-law.

Just as construction of the estimated $4 million Lakewood Intergenerational Community Center adaptive reuse project is set to begin, the city recently received a $250,000 Ohio Capital Budget Grant toward the project.
On September 2, the 2020 Building Excellence & Craftsmanship awards were held to honor and recognize tradespeople, apprentices and builders of top construction projects throughout Northeast Ohio. After careful consideration with partner associations regarding the health and safety of everyone in the industry, the awards were held virtually. The presentation is available online.
